The Environmental Working Group released its updated “Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides,” a list of produce highest and lowest in pesticide residue, last week. If you want to reduce your pesticide exposure but don’t have the time (or budget) to buy everything organic, use this list as a cheat sheet. You can even print out a handy wallet card here.
Choosing organic is a personal choice; but I, for one, am a fan of keeping chemicals off my plate whenever possible. I’ve used this guide for years to make conscious and quick choices about what I buy each time I hit the grocery store or farmer’s market. Oh, and one other quick tip for buying organic: At the grocery store, take a look at the little sticker labels on the produce. If the number begins with a 9, it’s organic; if it begins with a 4, it’s conventionally farmed.
Happy shopping!
