“It’s so easy to get into that knee jerk ‘here’s how I’m doing my life’ without stopping to say ‘Is this working the way I want it to work?’ Am I feeling the way I want to feel? Am I accomplishing what I want to accomplish?’ Am I being the person who I choose to be?’”

Dr. Samantha Brody is a licensed naturopathic physician and acupuncturist and the owner and founder of Evergreen Natural Health Center in Portland, Oregon. She’s also the author of the soon to be released book Overcoming Overwhelm: Dismantle Your Stress from the Inside Out.

We talked about aligning self-care choices with your values, the difference between stress and overwhelm, and why it might be time to re-examine what you do and do not have control over in your life.

Highlights

  • How to align your self-care choices with your values (and how to figure out what your values are in the first place!)
  • The creative way that Dr. Samantha took care of her own needs and the needs of her 12-year old son when they seemed to be in conflict
  • Why Dr. Samantha thinks stress is different from overwhelm, and how they’re related
  • What happens in your mind and body when you don’t address overwhelm
  • The different kinds of stress in our lives that eventually cause overwhelm
  • How reexamining what we do and do not have control over in our lives sometimes produces surprising (and freeing) results
  • Dr. Samantha’s annual practice that helps her determine if she’s living her life in alignment with her values
  • The mindset that allowed Dr. Samantha to consistently practice self-care (instead of giving up) when a severe back injury slowed her down
  • Samantha’s morning routine – and Lara’s revelation about how she might change her morning routine to match!
  • Dr. Samantha’s tips for navigating the overwhelm of the holiday season (so you can feel the way you want to feel, and make space for what really matters)
