“Exercising motivates me to eat healthy because I’ve invested time going to the gym, and I’m not going to ruin it with certain things. But there are certain things I’m NOT going to give up! “
-Amanda Goldstein Marks

In May 2017, sisters Alison Goldstein Lebovitz and Amanda Goldstein Marks decided their phone conversations were so entertaining they should turn them into a podcast. A week later, one of my favorite podcasts – Sis & Tell – was born.

Alison and Amanda are dedicated to both their families (with six kids between them) and their careers (as a PBS television host and stand-up comedian, respectively). They also happen to be two of the funniest Southern ladies I know – which is saying a lot, since I grew up in the South. So I invited them on the podcast to talk finding exercise you love (even if you hate it), staying motivated, fried chicken, Southern accents, and what really matters in matters of health.

More About Alison & Amanda:

Alison Goldstein Lebovitz is never at a loss for words and luckily has been able to make a living off her gift for gab. She is the host of The A List with Alison Lebovitz, a half-hour television show for PBS, and the author of Am I There Yet? a collection of her candid essays and life-inspired stories. Alison also combines her penchant for humor with her passion for storytelling to deliver motivational talks across North America, and has been honored to serve as a TedX speaker, coach and emcee. In her spare time she runs a nonprofit called One Clip at a Time, plays tennis and binge watches shows on Netflix. She and her husband have three boys and live in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Amanda Goldstein Marks is a quirky and endearing stand-up comedian, actress, content creator, and super (tired) mom. Amanda performs stand-up comedy, emcees events throughout the country, and is a featured comedian on The Brisket Belt Comedy Show touring the Southeast and New York. She recently opened for comedian Judy Gold at The City Winery. Amanda also has a branding and marketing background working with brands such as Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and Oracle. When Amanda isn’t doing comedy, you can find her hosting her web series, Mom Cam in the Minivan, where she is often rapping the Beastie Boys, or creating a seven-course meal from the snack items she finds on the floorboards. She and her husband live with their three kids in Decatur, Georgia.

Highlights

  • Amanda struggled for years to stick with exercise – until she discovered the one thing that keeps her motivated
  • Alison was ‘the athletic one’ growing up, but she has self-described ‘exercise ADD.’ She shares how getting bored with exercise doesn’t have to mean giving it up
  • The challenges of making self-care a priority as a stand-up comedian – and Amanda’s unique trick for not drinking when she’s performing at a bar (this could work anywhere!)
  • Alison shares perspectives on what it means to be truly healthy from her The A List interviews with luminaries such as Jane Pauley and Randi Zuckerberg – including the importance of mental health
  • When it comes down to it, health has as much to do with connecting with the people we love as with food and exercise. Amanda and Alison share the fun (and simple!) ways they keep family connection front and center in their busy lives
