Imagine a place where a group of people – thrilled to see you – offer their hands for high-5’s as you walk through the door.
Now, stick with me, ‘cause what I’m about to say may sound a little crazy:
What if you high-5’d a stranger? Every day.
You’re walking down the street, feeling good. You smile at the person walking towards you, raise your hand, and say “High 5!”.
Even if you’re feeling cranky, your crankiness transmutes. Your energy lifts. Your heart opens.
Ditto for the person who high-5’d you back.
Granted, there may be a moment of awkwardness and confusion. You may be rejected, ignored or told your nuts.
But what about the awesomeness that happens when you connect with a stranger, for no reason?
What about THAT?!
(Turns out that “don’t talk to strangers” is bad advice when it comes to happiness. Check out this research.)
To be fair, I’ve only tried this in the safety of my office.
My co-workers probably thought I’d lost it. (They already think I’m odd – in a good way, I think? – so this just reinforced their image of me. 😉
But for the few days that I made a point of connecting with people in this way, life felt better. More celebratory.
And I know at least a few of my high-5 recipients felt uplifted too.

The question I received most often was “Why?”, to which I replied “Just because.”
Smiles all around.
Cool.
What can you do to make your day more of a celebration?
High-5’s?
Pancakes for breakfast? (On a Monday.)
Lunch out at an indulgent restaurant?
Champagne at dinner?
Cupcakes and kittens? 😉
Who knows…you may even find a “real” reason to celebrate. There’s always something.
Let me know in the comments what you did to make your day a celebration. I especially want to hear from you if you were bold enough to high-5 a stranger!
Party on.
xo,
